  • Officers tried to calm him down and used a taser as well.
  • He was shot after police say he threatened officers.

Burlington police say just after 5:30 p.m. Monday, a man wielding a machete style knife was acting erratically, cutting tires of a car in a driveway at a home on Dorsett Street.

Officers Richard Marsh and Alek Ayer say they tried to calm the man down and at one point used a taser on him, but it had no effect.

Police say the man was shot after charging at officers.

“This is not a normal occurrence here. It’s been quite a night for the the officers here at the Burlington Police Department to try to work through the series of events but we are dedicated to communicating with the community as this investigation unfolds,” said Brian Long, Burlington Police Department assistant chief.

The Alamance County District Attorney has requested the State Bureau of Investigation to look into the shooting.

Both officers are on administrative leave.
