AUSTIN, TX -- Mayor Vi Lyles and four city council members are heading to Austin Thursday night for the Republican National Convention summer meeting.

  • Mayor Vi Lyles and council members will go to Austin ahead of official vote Friday
  • Convention expected to be held summer of 2020

They'll meet with committee members before Friday's vote finalizing the city's bid as the 2020 convention host city. RNC site selection committee member Jonathan Barnett says he was impressed by the early community support from Mayor Lyles and business leaders.

"I was pleased with your host committee, good representation and again, I saw the enthusiasm that Charlotte had so Charlotte's got a lot going for it, and y'all should be very proud of your community," Barnett said.

Nevada GOP officials say the 12-member site selection committee voted in favor of Charlotte as the 2020 host city. This is after some Charlotte council members voiced concerns about the event. Barnett says that opposition didn't affect the city's bid.

"You know it's just human nature. Sometimes you have to defend your position in whatever manner you can, but that's the American way and they should have the right to do and city council is a good place to do it," he said.

RNC committee members from North Carolina say Charlotte would be a good place for the 2020 convention and want people to look beyond the rhetoric coming of Washington.

"There are many misconceptions that people have about the Republican party and what we stand [for] and so it would be nice for people to see us on our best behavior," committeewoman Dr. Ada Fisher said.

The convention is expected to be held in late July or August of 2020, but until then, parties are having a friendly challenge on Twitter.
