ASHEBORO, N.C. -- There’s now two baby southern white rhinos at the North Carolina Zoo.

  • Calf born Friday morning
  • Mother gave birth in the Watani Grasslands
  • Mother and calf are healthy

The second was born early Friday morning to mom Kit and dad Stormy on the zoo's Watani Grasslands habitat.

Zookeepers say mom and baby are doing well. The unnamed calf is expected to gain 100 in a month and could weigh between 3,500 to 5,500 pounds when fully grown.

Last Monday, Linda gave birth to a baby girl -- the first rhino born at the park in more than 40 years. With the addition of Kit's new female calf, the zoo now has nine rhinos though two of them live in an off-viewing retirement habitat.
