HIGH POINT, N.C. -- A tragic case of domestic violence in Orlando, Florida has turned the community's head toward the successful program the High Point Police Department uses.

  • High Point police launched the program in 2013
  • Program tracks domestic violence offenders after the first crime
  • Advocates in Orlando are looking to bring similar program to their communities

Florida leaders in the fight against domestic violence are pushing to bring the model to their communities. The determent program launched in 2013 is meant to track offenders after the first crime, offering resources to help prevent them from re-offending.

"The High Point model really made sense to me. It certainly had the statistical backing, the economic impact that we were looking for. So, I started on my efforts to try and engage the leaders in the community and we have everyone here ready to implement the model here locally," domestic violence survivor advocate Carol Wick said.

Advocates in Florida and High Point Police Cheif Ken Shultz will promote the model in September. They plan to do that at the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence annual conference in Rhode Island.
