GREENSBORO N.C. -- Greensboro police are giving credit to the 'Me Too' and 'Time's Up' movements for the increase of reports of rape. Compared to the same time last year, GPD says reporting has gone up 11 percent from 9 to 19. In the last month, Sgt. P.D. Nix in the Family Victims Unity of GPD says there were between 10 and 12 reports of rape.

  • Reports of rapes up 11 percent in Greensboro
  • Police credit the recent movements in empowering victims to come forward
  • To report a rape, contact the Family Service of the Piedmont 24-hour crisis line at 336-273-7273

Nix says the movements online have empowered victims to come forward.

"Because now the victim feels empowered and they can feel like they can actually report this kind of crime to the police department and we would not want to hinder anybody in doing that whatsoever,” Nix said. “We're actually happy about this movement and the fact that it is having these victims come forward and bringing these to our attention."

Sgt. Nix adds that the department has had people report on incidents of rape that happened 10 years ago. The Family Service of the Piedmont has a 24-hour crisis line at 336-273-7273
