CHAPEL Hill, N.C. -- Community members took park Saturday in a walk to honor the life of a culinary legend.

  • Saturday's gathering was a prelude to a basketball camp, which is sponsored in part by Mama Dip's

Mildred Council, also known as Mama Dip, passed away just days ago.

Mama Dip's Kitchen has been a staple of Chapel Hill for years.

The commemorative walk was a quarter mile long from Mama Dip's restraunt to the Hargraves Community Center.

At the end of the walk, people too part in passing, shooting, and vertical jump tests for 89 minutes; signifying one minute for earch year she lived.

"I wanted to do something to honor my dear friend, her tremendous community service, and generosity to a variety of causes," stated UNC Walk for Health Cofounder and Director William Thorpe.

"She is an example of the American dream of openness and opportunity."

Saturday's gathering was a prelude to a basketball camp, which is sponsored in part by Mama Dip's. Her funeral is set for May 27.
