A very soupy airmass remains in place around the Carolinas, and we will continue to have scattered showers and storms at times today and this evening. Mountain highs will be in the 70s with piedmon highs in the low to mid 80s.

  • Showers generally expected.
  • Temperatures will range from 70s - 80s
  • Prediction: Coca-Cola 600 will be able to happen

For Sunday, widespread showers and storms will continue to highlight the mountain forecast. However, I have trended the forecast for our piedmont areas drier. For the piedmont, a few showers and storms will remain possible Sunday, but many areas could actually remain dry through the day and evening. Accordingly, I think the chances are very good that we can get the Coca-Cola 600 in Sunday evening.

As tropical moisure on the east side of Alberto sets up shop in the Carolinas, our weather looks very unsettled with good shower and storm chances Monday through Wednesday. Due to saturated ground conditions, some flooding issues could crop up from time to time.

Toward the end of the week, look for fewer storms and hotter temperatures.

Alberto:

Alberto was classified as a system midday Friday. The system remains very poorly organized as of this typing, so I do not expect any significant strengthening today. However, some intensification is possible Sunday as upper level conditions improve around the system.

Alberto should make landfall on the central Gulf Coast by Memorial Day or Monday night, likely as a tropical storm. If your holiday weekend plans take you to the Gulf Coast, there will be increased rip currents and surf, but I don't expect anything that would prompt any widespread evacuations. However, flooding issues are possible around the Southeast, and some spin-up tornadoes will remain possible near and to the east of the track of the system, especially around Florida and southern Georgia.
