  • The bill will go before at least one committee before it has a chance to move to the house for a vote.

House Bill 965, known as the National and State Mottos in School Act, was filed last week.

"I don't believe you hide history under a rock," says Rep. Allen McNeill. "I mean, you take your history, you're proud of your history and you display your history."

Sponsors say it highlights history but opponents say its more likely to make some students feel uncomfortable.

"It's not inclusive and it's unnecessary," says American Civil Liberties Union of North Carolina Spokesperson Mike Meno. "When students of any beliefs walk into a school to learn they should be greeted equally and with respect."

The bill will go before at least one committee before it has a chance to move to the house for a vote.
