GREENSBORO, NC. -- Leaders in the Triad have been talking about the Greensboro Urban Loop for more than 30 years.

  • The loop will be 44 miles long
  • Mayor says it will be an economic generator
  • Loop to be completed by 2022

Construction of the 44-mile long loop started in 2013 and on Thursday, ground broke for the last five miles. Being in the central part of the state, Greensboro's mayor says the city is the best place for this project.

"This is what we're known for, logistics. This is will be a great economic generator, something that we have been waiting for,” said Mayor Nancy Vaughan. ”It'll open up acres for economic development. I think this is the right place, the right time."

The last five miles of the Greensboro Urban Loop is expected to be completed by 2022.
