An unsettled weather pattern is just getting started Wednesday that will last through at least early next week.  Off and on showers and thunderstorms are in the forecast for all of North Carolina for the next several days.

The amount of moisture in the atmosphere over the Carolinas is at an almost unprecedented level for mid-May.  That will fuel showers and storms that will produce heavy downpours at times.  Rain cannot be ruled out at anytime of day or night, but the highest chance for the downpours in central North Carolina will come during the afternoon and evening hours.   The mountains and the coast could see some of the heaviest rain late at night and in the morning hours.

By early next week, most of North Carolina will have likely seen at least two to four inches of rain.  Some locations especially near the mountains and coast could see up to five inches.

With day after to day of these off and on downpours, the threat for isolated flooding will increase by the end of this week and weekend. It only takes about a foot of moving water to float most cars, trucks, and SUVs.  It can be difficult to determine exactly how deep the water may be especially at night.
