CUMBERLAND COUNTY, N.C. – In the race for Cumberland County sheriff, it was a crowded pool of candidates, but Sheriff Ennis Wright (D) will face Charlie Baxley (R) for Cumberland County sheriff.

After 22 years, Sheriff Moose Butler retired in 2016, appointing Ennis Wright as the first black sheriff.

The democratic incumbent faced two party challengers: Jeff Marks, a former assistant superintendent for the division of public safety and Denny Davis, a 40-year veteran who previously worked as a sergeant for the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office.

Four Republicans looked to narrow their chances. Carlton Sallie, Victor Starling, who's run for sheriff before, LaRue Windham and Charlie Baxley who served with the Fayetteville Police Department for 21 years and the sheriff's office for 15 years.

Wright will face off against Charlie Baxley during the November election.
