ROCKINGHAM COUNTY, N.C. -- Cleanup continues after a tornado blew through the triad Sunday and the small community of Ruffin is still suffering from heavy damage.

Ruffin United Methodist Church in particular suffered extensive damage, including the steeple being blown off.

One of the folks helping with the clean up, especially at Ruffin United Methodist Church, is J.C. Powell.

"I just came up here to help 'em out," stated Powell, as the sound of chainsaws fills the air. "It's been devastation up here and I just felt like I needed to help."

Lee Egger, a pastor at Ruffin UMC stated "I had a tear come in my eye, not only for the church but the whole community it took a pretty bad hit."

At least one house was destroyed with another being condemned after a wing was smashed.

Downed trees are scattered around with a grain silo also being knocked over. Community members have pulled together to help others.

State and local emergency management will be touring the area Thursday to assess the damage.
