GUILFORD COUNTY, N.C. -- Guilford County is under a State of Emergency so crews can continue to cleanup. 

A confirmed tornado touched down near Gate City Boulevard and Highway 29. One person is dead. According to the National Weather Service in Raleigh, a high-end, EF-2 tornado struck Greensboro with max winds of 135 mph. 

Guilford County Schools are closed because of extensive damage and power outages. Three schools, Hampton, Peeler and Erwin Elementary Schools were significantly damaged. 

A shelter is set up at Glenwood Rec Center on Coliseum Boulevard where people affected by this storm can go. Domesticated pets are welcome.

"We are deeply saddened about this for all of our children and families that are impacted and we are certainly here to support all of you and our community members,” said Dr Sharon Conteras, GCS superintendent, during a news conference Sunday night. 

The district is asking that essential personnel, facilities and management staff report as scheduled and directed by their supervisors.
