WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Wake Forest University held a garden party Sunday to close out a week of events celebrating long-time professor Maya Angelou who would've turned 90 on April 4.

In addition to being an award-winning writer and activist, Angelou taught American studies at Wake Forest for more than 30 years.

The event featured poetry performances, food trucks, music and lawn games. Students say Angelou is still a big part of the community there and they're happy to honor her.

"There's a couple of people who are performing her pieces, and then there are a few people who are performing pieces they wrote in honor of her. And then, some are just doing original pieces that they think kind of work with the message that she had," student Sydnei Mooring says.

An exhibition featuring movie scripts, drafts of plays and other materials Angelou donated are on display at the university's Z. Smith Reynolds Library through June 1.
