WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Forsyth County's Humane Society took over adoptions for the county early this year as part of a plan to bring down the euthanasia rate in the county.

So far, the nonprofit has been able to place close to 700 animals through adoption, being reclaimed by their families, or transferred to other shelters across the east coast.

"Transferring animals to other reputable rescues opens up more kennels here. So that we can save more here,” explains Executive Director, Sarah Williamson. “It's part of the model that we're following from other communities who've been successful in bringing this euthanasia down."

One of the perks of the partnership is help from the county to make improvements. The county has replaced some leaky windows and plan on replacing several kennels.
