SURRY COUNTY, N.C. -- A Surry County mother is facing felony charges after her 13-year-old son died in a house fire in January.

Maria Kidd is charged involuntary manslaughter and felony child abuse.

Fire crews were called to a home on CC Camp Road outside of Elkin.

While putting out the fire, firefighters found the body of the teen inside.

Investigators determined Kidd's actions during the fire directly caused the death of her son. They also say living conditions in the home posed a substantial risk of injury to the child and contributed to the rapid spread of the fire.

Kidd was placed in jail on $150,000 dollars bond.
