CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- Pressure and outcries continue to mount for lawmakers to squash gun violence after last week’s deadly school shooting in Florida.

Over the past few days, students have held walk-outs and demonstrations in honor of the victims in the Florida school shooting last week.

Thursday, a similar rally was held on the campus of UNC Chapel Hill.

Many in attendance held signs and chanted. They came together to put pressure on lawmakers to increase gun control, which includes banning certain weapons and stronger background checks.

Lily Skopp is a freshman at UNC who attended the rally. She graduated from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School and knew two of the victims killed in the shooting.

Skopp says gun control will be a big issue when the next election comes around.

"We don't need to wait for our future to happen," she said. "We're going to be the voters. And it's important for students to realize that you can make a difference. It's not just the lawmakers."

In all, 17 people were killed in the Florida school shooting.
