NEW HANOVER COUNTY, N.C. -- High school students in New Hanover County will stay where they are, at least for another year.

In a 4 to 3 vote Tuesday night, the board of education decided to postpone plans to redistrict until their September meeting.

The redistricting plan would have moved more than 750 students to different schools and was supposed to help with overcrowding.

However, many parents voiced concerns saying it would make their child's daily life more difficult and increase their commute time.

Board member Donald Hayes said the decision will give them more time to consider all options.

“Young people do not want to leave their schools. We understand that. I am hoping that with the choices we provide, my main objective is to provide as much choice as possible to these students and to let them and their families make the choice as to where they attend school where that’s possible,” said Hayes.

Any future redistricting will not happen until the 2019-2020 school year.
