RALEIGH -- The flu is hitting North Carolina hard this year.

In the most recent flu update, 20 people in our state died between January 21 and 27. That brings the total number of flu deaths in North Carolina to 95 this season.

Now, gathering places like churches are talking about how to keep parishioners from getting sick while sharing the same space.

The Holy Name of Jesus Cathedral in Raleigh says, for now, they aren't changing how services are conducted.

Several church members spoke out about their feelings towards the issue.

“We really feel that is important part of church being participants in church,” said parishioner John Paschal. “We are concerned about the flu and keeping our hands clean... but we have hand sanitizer that we keep.”

“Communion, passing the peace all this-- are such an individual thing that I think the diocese is wise to leave it up to the individual,” said parishioner Mara Masters.

Officials with the parish say they take health issues seriously.

They say leaders say they will look into changing any policies if the situation warrants it.
