GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Parents and potential students got a sneak peek at southeast Greensboro's first free public charter school.

Next Generation Academy won't be opening until August, but parents still got a chance to check out the three completed classrooms and speak to teachers.

The academy will be in the same building as an old Christian school  with more than 20 classrooms when it's completed.

The goal of the school is to serve under-performing students in kindergarten through second grade with a focus on early literacy.

"We just want to make sure that we provide the students with ample books, ample access to technology, access to highly qualified and dedicated teachers, and that's what our goal is and we feel really good about the program that we're putting together," Executive Director Dr. Sam Misher said.

Officials will be choosing 100 students for each grade by lottery in March.

They say the school will also make a "major announcement", next month, about technology that will allow students to have internet access in their homes.
