WINSTON-SALEM -- The Moravian Church is condemning a statement the president is accused of saying last week regarding less fortunate countries.

The statement from the worldwide Moravian Church leadership said the president's "derogatory" statement "belitted people of colour everywhere".

The comments hit home with church members in Winston-Salem.

"To me it was a model of Christian vitality, so the last thing we should be doing is demeaning or stereotyping our brothers and sisters from Africa, and the Carribean," says Reverend Jeff Coppage, of Fries Memorial Moravian Church. "It's not about the nation people come from, it's the character, the content of their character, as Martin Luther King said."

The president denies making the comment.
