WAKE COUNTY, N.C. -- A woman was killed when her vehicle ran off a Wake County road on Monday morning and flipped into a pond.

According to the N.C. Highway Patrol, Maria Prieto, 23, was driving down Robertson Pond Road in the Wendell area when her car lost control and crashed onto the frozen pond.

The car then slid, upside down, into a tree.

Authorities believe the impact of the car and tree cracked the ice, and trapped Prieto in her vehicle.

Multiple agencies worked to free Prieto, but were unable to reach her in time.

Speed is thought to have been a factor in this incident.
