TRIAD -- The Triad Haitian Community Association aims to support Haiti days after Hurricane Matthew devastated the island.
The association is comprised of roughly 10 Haitians who live in the Triad and want to raise funds for needed necessities.
"Everything we can get, household supplies, everything we can get our hands on will help,” Marc Simon with the association said.
The Category Four hurricane destroyed homes and stripped trees bare last week.
"It's a pretty heartbreaking situation on the ground right now,” Simon said.
Simon said he was able to communicate with family on the island, but not everyone in the group was as fortunate.
"We do have people in this community, in the Triad community that have not heard from their family members because of lack of communication,” Yvelene Felix with the association said.
The group wants to aid in recovery efforts but needs the community’s help.
"We're trying to raise funds to help the Haitian community,” Felix said. “We have contacts over there at this moment and those contacts are at the local churches that will be able to distribute the money where it is needed the most."
The association is also asking for donations of clothes (not jackets), non perishable food, tents and bottled water. Those items can be dropped off at First Haitian Wesleyan Church of High Point at 724 Old Thomasville Road, High Point
