RALEIGH – It’s showtime at the state fair.

People across the state come out to show off and go head-to-head with other farmers in the livestock competition.

Those who place in the top tier in their category have the chance to walk away with scholarships and prize money, but preparation is key.

“We start months before with different feeding regimens and supplements kind of like a diet for people,” said Rachel Murphy of Murphy Show Goats. “If you want to get in shape, you’ve got to eat certain foods, put certain stuff in your milkshake and that’s kind of what we do for the goats. And we exercise them too.”

Between the livestock competitions and the other exhibits at the state fair, more than $600,000 in prize money is awarded each year.
