FAYETTEVILLE --  Just three years after the end of the Civil War, what was once empty property in 1868, was built into a two-room framed building for worship by a handful of former slaves. But it didn’t take long for the African-American church to grow and the dream to spread of helping and serving the community. That trend has continued the past 150 years.

Now, in 2018, First Baptist Church in Fayetteville is celebrating a major milestone. Spectrum News anchor Caroline Blair went In Depth with the church’s pastor, Rev. Dr. Cureton Johnson, about where they've been, where they're going and how they’re celebrating with the community they serve.

The church has held a number of celebratory events over the past few months. And they’re topping off the commemoration with a Sesquicentennial Banquet on Saturday, June 16 at 5 p.m., with a speech from Boston College’s Athletic Director, Mr. Martin Jarmond and special musical guest, Mr. Reggie Codrington.

The celebration continues on Sunday, June 17 at 10:45 a.m. when they hold an Anniversary Worship Service with special guest preacher Rev. Dr. Paul A. Lowe Jr.  For more information, visit the church’s website.
