For anyone who’s ever used Twitter, you know your message has been limited to 140 characters.

  • Twitter is expanding its character limit to 280
  • Most users will notice change by Tuesday evening
  • Character limit hasn't changed since Twitter launched in 2006

However, Twitter has now expanded that limit to 280 characters for all users.

In a tweet Tuesday, Twitter said, “We’re expanding the character limit! We want it to be easier and faster for everyone to express themselves.”

Twitter began testing 280-character tweets with select users in September.

In the first days of the test, most people tweeted the full 280 limit, said Twitter product manager Aliza Rosen in a blog post Tuesday. After the novelty wore off, only 5 percent of tweets sent by people with access to the feature had more than 140 characters. But those users were more engaged, according to Twitter. Also, posts featuring 280 characters received more "likes" on average.

The new character length won’t apply to Japanese, Korean or Chinese-language tweets. Twitter said those languages can convey more information in less space.

The social network’s character limit hasn’t changed since its launch in 2006.

The feature is being rolled out on the official Twitter app and web interface.
