ORLANDO, Fla. — We are continuing to watch Tropical Depression Six, which gained the depression designation Friday afternoon.

It has no threat to Florida or the United States.

The system is located approximately 85 miles west-southwest of the southernmost Cabo Verde Islands.

Winds are 35 mph. It is moving to the west at 14 mph.

Tropical Storm Warnings continue for the southern Cabo Verde islands, including:

  • Santiago
  • Fogo
  • Brava

The system is expected to gradually strengthen over the next few days. If it becomes a tropical storms, it will be given the name Florence. On the official forecast track, it will continue on a path out into the open Atlantic.

Outer rain bands are affecting southern sections of the Cabo Verde Islands. Rainfall of 2-4”, with isolated 8” amounts, are likely over the next 24-36 hours.

Keeping an eye on tropical wave in the Caribbean

Elsewhere, we are watching a tropical wave near the Dominican Republic that is producing heavy rainfall across northern parts of the Caribbean.

This is expected to move northwest over Cuba and into the Gulf of Mexico early next week.

Once it’s in the Gulf, there is a low chance of tropical development. While formation of a tropical system is very low, enhanced rainfall across the state is likely for early next week.

Atlantic hurricane season runs through Nov. 30.
