WILMINGTON, N.C. -- Hurricane Florence has broken the record for most debris and amount of money spent on recovery in Wilmington.

  • On Tuesday, city council unanimously approved upping the total recovery budget to almost $25 million
  • Contractors have picked up over 1.3 million cubic yards of storm debris
  • Residents that think their storm trash was missed should call 910-341-7875

On Tuesday, city council unanimously approved upping the total recovery budget to almost $25 million. Most of that money is for debris clean up.

Contractors have picked up over 1.3 million cubic yards of storm debris.

City spokesperson Dylan Lee said the city prepares as well as they can for an event like this one.

"Obviously the hurricane brought extensive damage to us, but one of the best things that the city has been doing for as long as I can remember are these preposition contracts with the debris haulers, that's DRC," said Lee. "What that means is the contracts are in place before hurricane season starts."

Lee said although it seems clean up is taking a while, contractors have been on the ground since a few days after Florence clearing roadways. They will be making their final passes in the coming weeks, and plan to have all Florence debris gone by Christmas.

Residents that think their storm trash was missed should call 910-341-7875.
