WILMINGTON, N.C. -- Residents in Jervay Communities are being asked to move out as soon as possible. Hurricane Florence caused mold in units.

  • At first, residents thought they would have to be out by Thanksgiving Day, but the move out date isn't as strict now.
  • Forty-one community members have to move out as repairs are being made to their apartments.
  • It could take three to six months for the repairs.

At first, residents thought they would have to be out by Thanksgiving Day, but community manager Brendella Blanks says the move out date isn't as strict.

Forty-one community members have to move out as repairs are being made to their apartments.

"I hadn't realized how bad it was until I started moving," said resident Acquanetta McNeil. "And then you see all this black mold that was hiding behind stuff, you know, in the closet, and behind you know -- when I was moving dressers, all that black mold so you don't want to be breathing that in."

McNeil says it's unfortunate some of them have to move out, but it's better than breathing bad air. She says she's saying with family during the repairs because it's hard to move from low-income housing to another apartment so quickly.

"You have a lot of rental agencies that are saying you have to have a 600 credit score and make three times the amount of money," said McNeil. "Personally, like for me, I have student loans, and so that's on my credit and it's an issue that they're not overlooking."

McNeil is thankful she will at least be able to spend the holiday with family, but says she will be eager to get back in her apartment soon.

Blanks says it could take three to six months for the repairs, and she hopes all the residents will return.
