NEW JERSEY -- Authorities say the feel-good story about a homeless man who grew up in North Carolina giving his last $20 to help a couple who had run out of gas was a scam.

The New Jersey couple who posted a photo and the story on GoFundMe raised $400,000.

Authorities say Johnny Bobbitt, who was raised in Henderson, and Mark D'Amico and Katelyn McClure, planned out the entire thing.

They've since been charged with theft by deception. The three had been in the middle of a legal battle after Bobbitt said the couple didn't give him any of the money.
