CRAVEN COUNTY, N.C. -- Marines at Cherry Point are starting a new tradition. For the second year in a row they presented their Historic Uniform Pageant to local schools including Creekside Elementary, New Bern High, Havelock Middle, and Roger Bell New Tech Academy.

  • Servicemen and women volunteered to dress in uniforms dating back to the Revolutionary War.
  • Students had the opportunity to learn what past Marines looked like.

Servicemen and women, who are students in the MCAS CNATT (Center for Naval Aviation Technical Training), volunteered to dress in uniforms dating back to the Revolutionary War.

Students had the opportunity to learn what past Marines looked like while making a connection to their military-centered community.

“We have many students that are part of military families and we’re all connected to Cherry Point and so it’s just a way to honor our veterans and this was such a treat," said Jodi Scoggins, Creekside Elementary school counselor.

Commanding Officer of MCAS Cherry Point Colonel Todd Ferry said he hopes to grow the program for coming years to continue teaching students about how the Marines of today came to be.

“A lot of times history can be boring," said Colonel Ferry. "But when you actually see someone walk out in a wig and a green uniform from 1775, the type the Marines wore back then, you can see the ‘oohs’ and the ‘ahhs’ and the excitement.”
