WILMINGTON, N.C. -- The Cape Fear Fair and Expo has been around for almost 50 years and organizers say it tells an important story about the region's history.

  • The fair features agriculture and livestock from local farmers.
  • Torrential rains this year have caused fewer crops to be entered than usual.
  • The fair is open at the Wilmington International Airport until November 4.

"Agriculture started a long, long time ago, you know," said Skip Watkins, fair manager. "Fairs, when farmers and merchants would get together and trade their goods, entertainment was intertwined into it, and since that time they have just expanded and grown."

More than just rides and carnival food, the fair features agriculture and livestock from local farmers. They enter their crops and produce into competitions to win ribbons and cash prizes.

Torrential rains this year have caused fewer crops to be entered than usual, but organizers say they understand and are hoping all the regular farmers will be able to return next year.

The fair is open at the Wilmington International Airport until November 4, open Monday through Friday 5:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m., Saturday 12:00 p.m. to 12:00 a.m., and Sunday 1:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m.
