  • The school's administration called Hammocks Beach State Park on Monday to ask if the park could lend the school some of its facilities
  • Swansboro Elementary is currently closed due to air quality risks
  • Classes will continue at the park until the school can reopen

The school's administration called Hammocks Beach State Park on Monday to ask if the park could lend the school some of its facilities. Park Superintendent Sarah Kendrick said the school could have access to all of the park's facilities.

By Tuesday morning parents were dropping off their students at the park for a three-hour block of learning. They used clipboards instead of desks but the administration said students were excited to be together again.

Swansboro Elementary is currently closed due to air quality risks. Only administration can enter it while wearing masks.

Principal Page Highsmith went into the school Monday night to gather supplies for teachers who planned to volunteer to teach at the state park.

Classes will continue at the park until the school can reopen.
