ONSLOW COUNTY, NORTH CAROLINA – Onslow County School Board held an emergency meeting Tuesday as 26,000 students continue to miss more than 20 days of class post Florence, and counting.

  • The school board received $5 million from Onslow County Commissioners Tuesday morning
  • The board estimates it will take $125 million for repairs to bring the schools back to pre-Florence conditions
  • Currently, 18 out of 38 schools are safe for students to attend in Onslow County

The school board received $5 million from Onslow County Commissioners Tuesday morning, enough to keep workers repairing their damaged schools through next week. But the school board estimates it will take $125 million for repairs to bring the schools back to pre-Florence conditions.

While the board waits on help from lawmakers and insurance, the school board is aiming to start class for some students as early as October 22.

“We're looking at doubling up schools. We had some initial discussions of possibly combining schools if we have a facility that's not available, but have another one in the same district that is. Sharing the space between two different groups of kids," said Brent Anderson, the spokesperson for Onslow County Schools.

Currently, 18 out of 38 schools are safe for students to attend in Onslow County with a capacity for only 14,500 kids.
