CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C -- Camp Lejeune military wives are helping each other in the wake of Florence.

  • Amber Zawistowki created the "Camp LeJeune New Mommies" page on Facebook to connect with other military wives
  • When the hurricane hit, she reached out to ask who was affected by Florence and found 14 families stationed at Camp LeJeune displaced
  • Donations are still needed, mostly queen-size mattresses

One mother of two, Amber Zawistowski, who lives on base, saw the need on her Facebook page called, “Camp LeJeune New Mommies.” She started the group to help military wives connect and help others.

When the hurricane hit, she reached out to ask who was affected by Florence and found 14 families stationed at Camp LeJeune displaced.

“I followed up with them, 'When are you getting a home? What do you need? I need specifics of what you need.' And then every Sunday I would post the needs of those families. And as those needs are met, I check up with them every Sunday to see if they need anything else,” said Zawistowski.

With the help of a local church who donated money and food, the other military wives in the group donated the rest.

“I got them beds and dressers and baby items, diapers, food. Everything in a house you could possibly need,” said Zawistowski.

As of now, Amber still has nine military families waiting to return to their homes. She says she is still looking for donations, mostly queen-size mattresses.

Those who want to help, can contact Camp LeJeune New Mommies Facebook group and put offering assistance in the questionnaire, or call/text Amber at 760-583-0528.
