The NC Works Career Center in Jacksonville is using their mobile bus to help those unable to work file claims for disaster unemployment assistance, while their own building undergoes repairs.

“We have had almost 100 people a day come to this mobile bus behind us and apply for disaster unemployment assistance, and that's just at this location,” said Lindsay Gress, who works at the Onslow and Carteret County offices of NC Works Career Centers.

Currently, there are two centers operating right now to help Onslow residents either apply for disaster unemployment benefits or find a job. Many jobs are temporary and some are permanent.

There are also state programs to put people to work while they wait on repairs to businesses.

“The Eastern Carolina Development board received $2 million to put people to work. This is all because of Hurricane Florence. These are clean up jobs of our local area, where they can help local entities like local government, non-profits with their clean-up efforts,” said Gress.

Those out of work due to Hurricane Florence can apply online or call 1-866-795-8877. They can also come in person from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at either of the Jacksonville locations, 416 Western Blvd. or 416 Center St.

Besides help with filing, NC Works does not process the unemployment claims. They do however link up employees and employers looking for work or looking for talent. Those interested in listing a job, or looking for a job, should log on to www.ncworks.gov or call 910-347-2121.
