PENDER COUNTY, NC. – Topsail Beach and Surf City are staying closed for visitors as the beach town continues cleaning efforts.

  • Officials say after debris from Florence washed up on the beaches, it's easy to get hurt
  • They're still tallying total damages
  • Some areas dealt with about two feet of water flooding homes and dunes being washed away

“It is not safe to be on that beach right now. A lot of this stuff is covered up. Some of it is still in the water. So please if anybody does go over there, it would be really easy to just put a nail through your foot,” said Surf City Mayor Doug Medlin.

Town officials from both towns are still assessing damage and picking up debris, battling sand and tallying total damages.

The Sound region of Topsail Beach took the biggest residential hit with about two feet of water flooding homes near Carolina Avenue and Trout Avenue.

In Surfside, several dunes were washed away by Florence, putting about three feet of sand people’s homes off North Shore Drive.
