CRAVEN COUNTY, N.C. -- Enjoying the outdoors after Hurricane Florence may be difficult without bug spray.

  • Standing water is a breeding ground for mosquitoes
  • Craven County doesn't have a program for the county to come and spray; hopes the state government can help
  • Experts suggest mowing lawns, trimming hedges and dumping standing water can keep them at bay

Standing water left behind by Hurricane Florence creates a breeding ground for mosquitoes. Residents in New Bern said they have never had an issue with mosquitoes like this before.

“You can’t just stop and stand without about 10 of them on you. And they’re huge,” said Sally Guinn, a resident of New Bern.

Experts suggest keeping your lawn mowed and hedges trimmed to take control over mosquitoes. Emptying dog bowls, gutters, and bird baths can also help keep the bugs at bay.

Some counties spray after hurricanes but Craven County does not have a program for that. It said it hopes the state government can step in to help but it currently has no plans to spray.
