CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The trial of former UNC Charlotte quarterback Kevin Olsen started Monday.

  • The Kevin Olsen trial began Monday.
  • The former UNCC football player is accused of raping is then-girlfriend.
  • The alleged rape and assault took place in Feb. 2017.

Olsen is accused of raping his then-girlfriend in an off-campus apartment in 2017.

On the first day, we caught a glimpse of the relationship between Kevin and his accuser, and the lead-up to the alleged rape and assault on Feb. 18, 2017.

In opening statements, ADA Jane Honeycutt says that it was supposed to be a “fun night” out in Uptown that turned into a nasty exchange of text messages when the pair was separated. Kevin allegedly got very angry because of said texts, and toward the end of the night, at his house, the victim was abused and forced to have sex with him.

The victim gave her testimony, saying Olsen reportedly threatened her.

"It wasn’t good. I knew at the same time he was pretty drunk…my goal was just to get him home,” she said.

Back at Olsen's house, she described watching as he became more irate over several text messages. She says he tried to hurt himself with a phone cord and was upset about his life. A quick calm down she says immediately changed back to anger and punches.

In her testimony, Olsen went to bed crying, but his demeanor changed and he wanted to have sex.

“After what he had did to me it didn’t feel right. That’s not what you do. I wasn't speaking, I was just laying there, I couldn’t move,” the victim said.

Defense attorneys paint a different picture, saying the pair had a tumultuous relationship, and she was “jealous" of his infidelities and was "desperate" to stay together.

The day after the incident, Olsen allegedly remembers waking up and noticing the victim was gone but left her clothes there. He was later questioned and arrested by CMPD.

“She didn’t know who to call or what had happened to her. What the defendant had just done to her. But she knew it was not OK,” said Honeycutt.

“On Feb. 20, 2017 less than a day after Mr. Olsen was arrested, she texted her best friend and said, ‘He is not a rapist,” said the defense attorney.

Testimony will continue Tuesday. The trial is expected to take two to three weeks.
