DURHAM, N.C. -- Police are investigating after 23-year-old Deandre Ballard was killed by a security guard.

  • Police responded to a shooting on East Cornwallis Road
  • That's where they found Ballard with a gunshot wound
  • He was taken to the hospital where he died

On Sept. 18, police responded to a shooting at Campus Crossings on East Cornwallis Road.

Authorities say there was an altercation prior between its security guard and Ballard, but no other details.

They found Ballard with a gunshot wound a short time later. He was taken to the hospital where he died.

The security guard in question works for the NC Detective Agency, and it says he acted in self-defense. He's now back at work.

NC Detective Agency is standing by their officer, but neither the company nor Durham Police are saying what led up to the altercation.

"This was self defense by our officer. This officer has been with us for 15 years, clean record and he feels terrible about it. Everybody here at NC Detective agency feel terrible about it," said Kevin Ladd of the NC Detective Agency.

Family members of Ballard have questions.

"Why the security guard didn't call for backup or didn't call for the police? What are the protocols when something like this happen?" asked Dana Tobias, cousin of Ballard.

A funeral for Ballard will be held Friday in New Bern.

Those with any information are asked to call Crime Stoppers at 919-683-1200.
