BURGAW, N.C. -- Two Pender County shelters are keeping about 260 dogs, cats, chickens, goats, horses for Florence victims who have nowhere to go.

  • Many other pets are being held while people find a place to live
  • The two Burgaw shelters are offering free pet food to any resident who needs it
  • Owners have 14 days to claim them before other agencies try to re-home the animals

The employees went on a rescue mission, extracting about 100 animals, which owners contacted them about, with addresses.

“We also started going door to door and kind of canvassing. We are not allowed to just knock on doors and look for pets, but if there was reasonable cause, meaning, we saw pets in the window or we could hear pets inside barking, then we did have permission of the emergency manager to go in and remove the animals for their safety,” said Jewell Horton, who went on the rescue mission with the Pender County Animal Shelter.

Many other pets are being held while people find a place to live.

The two Burgaw shelters are offering free pet food to any resident who needs it. They say if your pet is missing to contact them, and to not lose hope because many good Samaritans took in animals that needed help and there are other shelters too. The good news is most of the pets staying there are accounted for.

Owners have 14 days to claim them before other agencies try to re-home the animals.
