RALEIGH, N.C. -- With high pressure giving the state great weather for late August, clear skies will make for a perfect opportunity to see the Moon and two planets on Friday evening.

  • The moon and two planets will be highly visible Friday evening and on Saturday night
  • The reddish looking object next to the moon is Mars
  • The yellowish looking object is Saturn

If you look in the eastern sky after sunset, you'll see the Moon.  Look just to the right of the Moon and a little higher in the night sky  you'll see a reddish looking object.  That will be the planet Mars.

After you find Mars, look farther to the right and higher in the sky. You'll see a brighter, yellowish looking object.  That is the planet Saturn.

If you've got a good set of binoculars, or a small telescope, use them to view all of these celestial bodies but pay close attention to Saturn. You should be able to see the planet's rings if you look closely.

Saturday should also present a good chance for viewing the Moon, Mars and Saturn as well.
