CAROLINA BEACH, N.C. -- Dozens of Carolina Beach residents are celebrating a big victory in their small town, no ugly fence is going up in their community.

  • The fence was supposed to be chain linked with three rows of barbed wire
  • The three-month-old decision was reversed after months of backlash
  • Town council will decide between four other fences priced between $160,000 to $290,000 at their next meeting Sept. 11

Carolina Beach Town Council voted Tuesday night that there will be no chain link fence with three rows of barbed wire going up around the Island Greenway Project, reversing a three-year-old decision after months of backlash.

“The Town Council really listened to the residents today. The decision to limit their fence selection to only the ones that do not have barbed wire is a win for the entire island, the residents, visitors, and anyone who will use the path itself,” said Melanie Coefield, a resident and chief crusader against the prison style fence.

She especially thanked Mayor Joe Benson for his efforts. He says there is still some work to do.

"We still have to get approval from the army. The main take away is for residents and visitors alike, we are not going to tolerate barbed wire on the fence. We want to go back and select something that is already on the list of approved fences by the US Army," Benson said.

Town council will decide between four other fences priced between $160,000 to $290,000 at their next meeting Sept. 11. They are looking into grants to help cover the costs.
