BURKE COUNTY, N.C. -- Authorities in Burke County have charged 32-year-old David Barnes with murder following a shooting Wednesday morning.

Deputies were called to Costner Road in Hickory around 2 a.m. Wednesday when they found Roger Hoglan dead.

Barnes claims the shooting was justified and he was protecting his family.

He says the victim tried to run him over with a car.

"When did it become okay for a man not to be able to protect his kids from drugs and drug abusers and people trying to kill him,” said Barnes.

The Burke County Sheriff's Office has charged him with murder.
