EMERALD ISLE, N.C. -- A 49-year-old woman from Kentucky drowned over the weekend while visiting Emerald Isle.

  • Donna Sue Miller was reportedly caught in a rip current shortly before 7 p.m. Sunday near The Islander Hotel.
  • Miller was found face down in the water and was brought to shore by bystanders.
  • Officials report ocean conditions were relatively calm in Emerald Isle all weekend, including the evening Miller died.

Donna Sue Miller was reportedly caught in a rip current shortly before 7 p.m. Sunday near The Islander Hotel, where she was staying with a close friend and her friend's daughter.

Miller was discovered face down in the water and was brought to shore by bystanders. Emerald Isle emergency personnel started CPR on the scene and transport Miller to Carteret Healthcare. 

Oddly enough, officials report ocean conditions were relatively calm in Emerald Isle all weekend, including the evening Miller died. 

According to officials, the incident occurred a little more than two hours before low tide.
