ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. -- The SBI and Pasquotank County Sheriff's Office are investigating the death of a man during an armed robbery.

• Milton Sawyer Jr. was assaulted by a suspect who was inside his home.
• Incident happened early Thursday.
• Sawyer died in an altercation with the suspect.

It happened in Elizabeth City at a home in the 1800 block of Darian Drive around 12:30 a.m. Thursday.           

Officials say the victim, 55-year old Milton Sawyer Jr., was entering his home with a woman when they were assaulted.

The suspect took money, jewelry and other items from the home.           

Sawyer died after an altercation with the suspect.

The female was hospitalized but was released.

There's no word if anyone was arrested but an autopsy is being completed to determine how Sawyer died.
