JACKSONVILLE, N.C. -- A New River Marine died when his motorcycle crashed into the back of an ambulance Saturday night.

  • Crash happened around 10:30 p.m. Saturday in Jacksonville.
  • Victim identified as Anibal Aptone-Ortiz, a Marine stationed at Marine Corps Air Station New River.
  • Troopers say Aptone-Ortiz did not slow down before the crash.

The State Highway Patrol said the motorcycle was going 100 miles per hour at the time of impact.

It happened on N.C. Highway 24 in Jacksonville near Walton Road.         

The victim has been identified as 24-year-old Anibal Aptone-Ortiz, of Florida.

Troopers said the ambulance had its lights and siren on when the crash happened and Aptone-Ortiz did not try to slow down before impact.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.
