The Caldwell County Sheriff's Office said in a news release the shooting happened around 11:30 p.m. Sunday near Lenoir.

The deputy was flown to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte for treatment. At last report, Jordan Sherrill was out of surgery and is in stable condition. Officials say he will make a full recovery.

He has been with the department just over a year and the sheriff's department says he was struck just below his bullet-proof vest.
