PENDER COUNTY, N.C. -- Tropical system "Chris" created heightened risks of rip currents, last week.

  • Post-tropical storm "Beryl" is still churning in the Atlantic
  • There is a moderate rip current risk from Cape Fear north
  • Swimmers say conditions weren't as bad as they thought they might be but they're being cautious

While those specific concerns have passed, area officials are still warning people about the potential dangers in the surf.

Post-tropical storm "Beryl" is still churning in the Atlantic.

There is a moderate rip current risk from Cape Fear north.

Swimmers say conditions weren't as bad as they thought they might be but they're being cautious.

"It wasn’t too bad today. I expected it to be worse because I heard of a possibility of rip currents in this area. I would just encourage everyone to be careful,” said visitor Dan Trenter.

Emergency officials say if you get caught in a rip current, stay calm.

Allow it to take you out, and then swim parallel to the shore.
