WILMINGTON, N.C. -- Some elementary school students in New Hanover County now have a new outlook on law enforcement after a week of "cop camp".

  • Wilmington students attended "cop camp" this week.
  • The camp is to allow students to interact with police.
  • WPD does the camp ever year.

The Wilmington Police Department hosted its annual event this week for local students to get to interact with officers.

Wilmington firefighter, Mike Lee, went through the program 20 years ago and came back this year to be a counselor. He says he hopes the program makes a lasting impression on the kids.

"I know for a fact, if we see them out in public they'll definitely come up and talk to us and tell us how things are going with them," says Lee. "And we really do hope the best for them"

Parents were also able to see some of the things their kids did throughout the week.

Counselors say, among other things, the children made lasting bonds.
